The Veia Traversina ( Rhaeto-Romanic in the idiom Sutsilvan , literally "crossing path") is a hiking trail in the canton of Graubünden that opens the Viamala for pedestrians. The route follows the Roman footpath through the Viamala and is part of the “Ecomuseum Viamala” project.

The Veia Traversina is developed and marketed for tourism by the Association Kulturraum Viamala .

Course of the route

The Veia Traversina, which is maintained by the Bündner Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Wanderwege (BAW), runs from Thusis in Domleschg to Zillis in Schams . The 11.5-kilometer Veia Traversina, which overcomes 700 meters in altitude and takes a five-hour walk, is also used by the Via Spluga long-distance hiking trail .

Traversine footbridge

The Traversinersteg describes a key point of the Veia Traversina. The bridge is used to cross the Traversiner Tobel, an eastern side valley of the Viamala , and can only be reached on foot.

  • Traversine footbridge I The first traversine footbridge was built in 1996, designed by Jürg Conzett . It consisted of a substructure, a 47-meter-long and 4.2-tonne three-belt framework made of larch wood , stainless steel cables and steel rods, which was flown to the site prefabricated with a helicopter. This construction was supplemented with a walkway. Just three years after the bridge was opened, it was destroyed by a rock fall.
  • Traversine footbridge II As the old location was classified as too dangerous for reconstruction, a new footbridge was built about 70 meters up the Rhine from the old location. The bridge was completed in 2005. It represents a hanging staircase that with the help of 176 steps overcomes the 22 meters difference in height between the two flanks. The suspension bridge made of steel and natural stone, pine and larch wood has a span of 95 meters, has a walkway length of 62 meters and is up to 70 meters above the creek bed. The bridge was again designed by Jürg Conzett from the Chur office Conzett, Bronzini, Gartmann .

Punt da Suransuns

In order to be able to continue the hiking trail in the southern part of the gorge, a bridge had to be built between the Wildener Brücke and the bridge at Rania on the old road. A place deep under the bridge of the motorway was chosen as the location .

The “Punt da Suransuns” was also built by Jürg Conzett and completed in 1999. For this project, an ideas competition was held in 1987 among regional engineering offices. The "Punt da Suransuns" was built as a tension band bridge from Andeerer granite slabs and prestressed using rectangular steel bars. This prestressing increases the rigidity and thus also the stability of the bridge considerably. The bridge is 40 meters wide and 1.1 meters wide. The total length is 45 meters. 2.6 tons of structural steel and a concrete volume of 12.5 tons were required for the construction. The entire construction cost 285,000 Swiss francs excluding taxes.

Wild bridges

To avoid the dangerous part of the gorge, master builder Christian Wildener from Davos built two stone bridges in the years 1738–39. The bridges were enlarged by Richard La Nicca in 1821 . A bridge was replaced when the new road was built in the 1930s. The other, 68 meter high Wildener Brücke was preserved. It was restored in 1988/89 and now serves as a lookout point into the gorge.

The hiking trail follows the cantonal road and crosses the gorge on the southern of the two bridges. Right next to two old were caverns of the Swiss army carved into the rock, which now serve as an exhibition space. The story of the region is presented in four languages.
