The Velkolom Čertovy schody (VČS) is a lime mine near Beroun in the Czech Republic .

history

The Velkolom Čertovy schody (German: Teufelstreppe) was founded after a decision by the Czechoslovak government on February 22, 1956. According to this decision, the opening of a large quarry between Zlatý kůň and Kotýz was planned, which should unite all the quarries in this area up until then. The limestone quarrying began in 1956 on the south wall of 1891 started quarry Císařský lom.

In the valley of Suchomastský potok near Tmaň , the processing plant with five shaft furnaces was set up in the early 1960s . The burnt lime has been transported away since January 31, 1961 via a five-kilometer-long, standard-gauge industrial railway that begins at Králův Dvůr on the Prague – Plzeň railway line . The Kleinbahn Königshof – Beraun – Koněprus , which had existed since 1898, was canceled in 1962.

In 1987 the currently used VČS - východ mining field on the Újezdce hill was opened up. In the original mining field VČS - západ , mining came to a standstill in the 1990s. By 2013 [obsolete] the area is to be renatured and included in a geopark.

The operator of the quarry is the company Vápenka Čertovy schody as , which belongs to the Lhoist group .
