Beroun (German Beraun , older also Bern ) is a royal city in the region of Central Bohemia , at the confluence of the Litavka in the Berounka , 30 kilometers west of Prague , with 17,646 inhabitants (2005). To the west of the city rises the Děd (492 m) and immediately southwest of the old town the Městská hora (290 m).

history

The first settlement in the area of today's city is mentioned from the year 1088, then in 1295 a fortified royal city stood here, among whose inhabitants there were many German merchants. On April 1st, 1421, 15 days after the conquest of Komotau , Beraun was conquered by the Hussite troops under Jan Žižka . Since then, the city has been mostly Czech. After the confiscation of the city's goods in 1547 and even more so after the Thirty Years' War , its importance declined. After the Podbrdsko district was merged with the Vltavsko district , Beroun became the seat of the new Berauner district in 1714 . The district seat was moved from Beroun to Prague in 1791 . Only after 1860, when ore and limestone were found in the area and the textile industry settled in Beroun, did the city grow again.

In August 2002, Beroun was hit by a flood. Since 1997 there has been a craft and ceramics market in Beroun on the main square in May and September. The market is the largest of its kind in the Czech Republic; it consists of 200 stands and has around 25,000 visitors.
