Tetín is a municipality in the Beroun district in the Czech Republic . It is located about 40 kilometers southwest of Prague and two kilometers from the district town of Beroun on a high cliff above the Berounka River . The place has 750 inhabitants (2006). Tetín is one of the oldest Czech pilgrimage sites .

history

The strategically located area had been inhabited since the Neolithic Age. In the early Middle Ages a hilltop castle was built here, which, according to archaeological research, dates from 2006 to the late 9th century. It was included in the sphere of influence of the Přemyslids in the 10th century and served to guard a river ford on the trade route to Regensburg and as an administrative center. Tetín was best known as the residence and refuge of the first Christian ruler of Bohemia, Ludmilla , who died a violent death here in 921. The chronicler Cosmas of Prague connected the place with the legendary prehistoric times of Bohemia in the 12th century and attributed the founding of the priestess Teta , the daughter of Krok and sister of Libuše .

The fortified complex of the Přemyslids lost its importance as early as the 10th century. In the 13th century, a Gothic castle was built in its place, which in 1321 came into the possession of Štěpán von Tetín, an illegitimate member of the Přemyslid house. Shortly afterwards, King Charles IV bought the place and gave it to the rule of Karlštejn Castle . During the Hussite Wars in 1422 the castle was destroyed.

Lime has been quarried on the nearby Damil mountain since the Middle Ages . The material was used, for example, to build the town hall in Beroun and for the Theresienstadt fortress . It was later used as a raw material for cement production. In 1898, the Königshof – Beraun – Koněprus railway began operations. Lime mining has been discontinued since it was shut down in 1962. One of the quarries is now used as a motocross track .

Attractions

The Přemyslid castle complex, originally about 10 hectares in size, is now fully integrated into the community area. Remains of the ramparts about 400 meters long have been preserved. Of the Gothic castle, too, only ruins can be seen.

There are three churches in Tetín:

  • The old parish church, originally the Church of St. Michael, contains Romanesque structures from the 12th / 13th centuries. Century. It underwent several renovations, most recently in 1836, when its patronage changed and it was consecrated to St. John Nepomuk. There are indications that the burial church of St. Ludmilla, built at the beginning of the 10th century, stood here.
  • The Romanesque church of St. Catherine is dated to the last quarter of the 12th century. Its current appearance goes back to a renovation in 1858. Tombs from the 11th century were found in the cemetery.
  • The third church is dedicated to St. Ludmilla. The early Baroque building was built around 1685 in place of an older chapel and was designated as the parish church of the village in 1781. It is equipped with an organ from 1771.

The Tetínské Skály and Koda nature reserves are located near the village.
