The Městská hora (German city mountain ) is a hill in the center of the city of Beroun in the Czech Republic . It is located 600 meters southwest of the Berouner Ring and is one of the foothills of the Křivoklátská vrchovina (Pürglitzer Uplands). There is a concrete observation tower on its summit.
Location and surroundings
The wooded hill rises to the left above the confluence of the Litavka and Berounka . To the north it falls into the Berounka valley and south into the Litavka valley. To the west rises the Děd (492 m).
To the north of the Městská hora lies the Sídliště Hlinky district, to the east is the Old Town, to the south Zavadilka and to the southwest the Pilsen suburb ( Plzeňské předměstí ). At the southeastern foot of the hill is the church in front of the gate ( Zábranský kostel )
Observation tower
After the local company Jelínek & Sons received an order to build a waterworks on the Městská hora in 1934, it proposed to the city to add a lookout tower for 50,000 crowns. The city accepted the offer, but only approved 35,000 crowns for the construction. Jelínek & Sons then revised their project. The 13 meter high tower with a covered viewing terrace at a height of 11 m was opened at Easter 1936. The tower construction is reminiscent of the former shape of diving platforms in outdoor pools. One fifth of the income from the entrance fees was used to care for war invalids. After the tower was closed in the 1990s due to dilapidation, it was reopened in 1999 after the city had completed its renovation.
The tower offers a view of the city and the mountains of the Bohemian Karst and Křivoklátská vrchovina.
