The Zlatý kůň (German literally: Golden Horse ) is a mountain in the Bohemian Karst near Koněprusy in the Czech Republic . Until the 1950s, the mountain was a center of limestone mining, since 1973 it has been a national natural monument (Národní přírodní památka) on 37 hectares under nature protection. The karst cave Koněpruské jeskyně , located in the southern flank and found during quarrying in 1950, is well known .

Location and surroundings

The mountain rises in the west of the Bohemian Karst, about five kilometers south of Beroun . To the north, directly on the shoulder of the mountain, is the small village of Koněprusy, to the south the large quarry ("Velkolom") Čertovy schody . In the west lies the valley of the Suchomastský potok , a right tributary of the Litavka .

Neighboring mountains are the Velký vrch in the north, the Kobyla in the east, the Újezdce in the south and (beyond the Suchomastský potok) the Koukolova hora in the west.

history

The history of lime extraction on Zlatý kůň began at the end of the 19th century. The Königshofer Zementfabrik AG (Královodvorská cementárna) began in 1891 in Císařský lom on the west side with the industrial dismantling for cement production. Other smaller quarries were built on the south side. On May 9, 1898, the Kleinbahn Königshof – Beraun – Koněprus (Drobná dráha Králův Dvůr – Beroun – Koněprusy) began operations. It connected the limestone quarries on Zlatý kůň with the cement factory in Königshof. The end point of the route was in the V Žabce quarry, the mountain range itself was crossed in a 246 meter long tunnel.

The end of lime extraction on Zlatý kůň came with the discovery of the karst cave Koněpruské jeskyně in the Zlatý koník quarry on September 14, 1950. After that, lime extraction concentrated more on the west side of Císařský lom, where the large quarry Čertovy schody was opened. The Koněpruské jeskyně was opened to the public in 1959 as a show cave. The necessary infrastructure, such as a parking lot and a ticket booth, was built on the mountain plateau. In 1962, the Kleinbahn ceased operations.

On December 29, 1972, 37.05 hectares of the mountain were placed under nature protection as a National Natural Monument (Národní přírodní památka).

flora

The mountain is best known for its warmth and drought-loving vegetation. Typical plant species include: Austrian scorpionfish (Dracocephalum austriacum), three-fingered saxifrage (Saxifraga tridactylites), pasque flower (Pulsatilla pratensis), early speedwell (Veronica praecox), hornwort (Cerastium pumilum), mountain stone herb (Alyssum montanum) , Earth sedge (Carex humilis) and sand cinquefoil (Potentilla arenaria).
