Velorgues is a hamlet in the French commune of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue .

history

The hamlet of Velorgues ( Latin Avellonicum ) was once a small settlement separated from L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Its origins go back to antiquity , and a Gallo-Roman estate probably existed here . In order to Christianize this, the church of St-Andéol was possibly built in late antiquity , which later formed the nucleus of a village structure.

In the 10th century the church became a priory of the Benedictine Abbey of Montmajour . In the 12th century, rule over the place finally passed into secular hands. One of the gentlemen had a massive tower built a few meters north of the church, which only served as a parish church . The castrum Velorgues was a lowland settlement at the time, which was surrounded by a fence and an outer moat and belonged to some large noble families in the area.

Velorgues never recovered from the unrest of the second half of the 14th and 15th centuries. There followed a slow decline and the disintegration of the old buildings. Relocated to the rank of a simple hamlet of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Velorgues experienced a gradual revival from the end of the 19th century.
