The Velutinidae are a family of exclusively marine snails found almost worldwide in warm, temperate and cold seas. They feed on sea squirts .

features

The mostly small, ear-shaped housings are twisted to the right and have a short, low thread. The mostly broad, egg-shaped, large mouth takes up most of the base. The snails have a blunted head and thread-like antennae, behind the base of which the eyes are raised. The radula of the volutinids has a row of central teeth and three rows of posterior teeth. The foot has a protruding corner on the front edge on each side.

The case is more or less completely covered by the very thick jacket hem. In some species (e.g. Velutina velutina ) the snail can retreat completely into the house, in others (e.g. Marsenina stearnsii ) the house can at least be shown by the snail by widening a slit on the back, while in further (e.g. some species of lamellaria ) the mantle over the house is fused.

The snails are small to medium in size. As far as the various species are known, the development takes place via a plankton-eating Veliger larva.

Way of life

The Velutinidae live in the tidal range up to a depth of several hundred meters. The main distribution is in the shallow water area. They live together with sea squirts , on which they mainly feed and in whose empty shells they lay their egg capsules.

Systematics

The family Velutinidae is divided into two subfamilies after the revision of the taxonomy of snails by Bouchet and Rocroi (2005):

  • Subfamily Velutininae JE Gray, 1840 - Synonyms: Marseniidae Leach in Gray, 1847; Marsenininae Odhner, 1913; Capulacmaeinae Golikov & Gulbin, 1990; Onchidiopsinae Golikov & Gulbin, 1990 (na); Marseniopsidae Badel, 1993 (na)
  • Subfamily Lamellariinae AD d'Orbigny, 1841 - Synonyms: Coriocellidae Troschel, 1848; Sacculidae Thiele, 1929 (inv.); Pseudosacculidae Kuroda, 1933
