Venice (Koenigsberg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Venice was the name of a former island in Königsberg (Prussia) .

Bounded by the suburban Klapperwiese and the Philosophendamm, it led from the Klapperwiese to the Aschhof. The vernacular called the tangle of trenches "Venice". The name became official in 1763 and remained so when the trenches were filled in in 1788. The keel trench was not removed until 1905.
