Venus of Macomer
The Venus of Macomer ( Italian Veneretta di Macomer or La Venere di Macomer ) was found in 1949 in the cave of Marras, above the ravine of the Rio S'Adde, near Macomer in the province of Nuoro in Sardinia .
description
The basalt statuette , classified as Neolithic , is around 14.0 cm high and three to five cm wide. Apart from the hare-like face, she has the peculiarities of Paleolithic "Venus" or mother goddesses and was a cult object. Rabbit heads engraved in the cave walls are also dated to the Paleolithic.
Giovanni Lilliu attributes the statuette to the Neolithic, but recognizes an archaic concept and the traditions of the Paleolithic. The unfinished or damaged Venus de Macomer is kept in the Archaeological Museum of Cagliari .
