Specialist for recycling and waste management
The specialist for recycling and waste management has been a state-recognized training occupation in Germany since June 17, 2002 according to the Vocational Training Act .
The previous job title was supply and disposal . This training occupation belongs to the group of environmental protection occupations, which also includes the environmental training occupations of specialist for wastewater technology , specialist for water supply technology and specialist for pipe, sewer and industrial service .
The terms garbage driver or garbage man were also used colloquially in the past .
Duration of training
The training period to become a specialist in recycling and waste management is usually three years. This profession is trained with specializations or focal points.

- Logistics, collection and distribution
- Waste recovery and treatment
- Waste disposal and treatment
As a rule, the training company determines the focus before hiring. The training takes place at the training company and vocational school .
Work areas
Specialists in recycling and waste management work in the public sector in waste disposal companies, recycling and disposal facilities, such as B. glass and paper recycling, landfills, recycling yards, composting plants or chemical-physical treatment plants.
Professional Skills
Specialists for recycling and waste management carry out their work independently on the basis of technical documents and rules as well as legal bases. They obtain information, plan and coordinate their work. They document their performance and take measures for quality assurance, safety, health and environmental protection at work.
