history

In 1879, the "Association of Manufacturers of Refractory Products in West Germany", based in Düsseldorf, was the first association in the industry. In 1881 the "Association of German Factories for Refractory Products" was founded in Berlin.

The VDFFI went after the second. World War I emerged from the “Fachvereinigung Feuerfeste Industrie”, which was founded in the British occupation zone and is based in Bonn. This was founded on February 23, 1949. On January 1, 1950, the refractories companies from the French zone could become members of the professional association. In 1975 the name was changed to "Association of the German Refractory Industry".

Since it was founded in 1949, maintaining and promoting the common business interests of the members has been the top priority of the association. In the summer of 1953, they moved into the Association House at the Elisabeth Church in Bonn. The joint research center “Research Institute of the Refractory Industry” also found its premises there. On May 26, 1986, the association founded the Feuerfest Prüflabor GmbH. The purpose of the company was to test and evaluate refractory products and raw materials with regard to their physical and chemical properties, mainly according to standardized procedures. On December 2, 1993 the merger with the research institute and the name change to "DIFK German Institute for Refractories and Ceramics". The sole shareholder of DIFK is the Association of the German Refractory Industry.

The VDFFI was a founding member of the European Association of Refractory Manufacturers (PRE) in 1953 and is still the largest member association today. He is also one of the four organizers and founding member of the international conference "Unified International Technical Conference on Refractory (UNITECR)", which has taken place every two years since 1989.

In 2013 the VDFFI founded the "ECREF European Center for Refractories gGmbH" and moved to Höhr-Grenzhausen / Westerwald together with the DIFK . Now the association is a direct neighbor of the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, WesterWaldCampus, which is also home to the "Materials Technology Glass and Ceramics" course. The Forschungsgemeinschaft Feuerfest e.V. is also located in the premises of the ECREF. V., which was founded in 1971.

In addition to representing interests, the VDFFI works together with the DIFK and ECREF for training and further education. He works in the field of standardization at national and international level (DIN, EN, PRE and ISO).
