The Association of German Old Austrian Landsmannschaften in Austria (VLÖ) is the umbrella organization of several Austrian associations of expellees whose aim is to represent the interests of different groups of expellees with German mother tongue from the areas of the former Austro-Hungarian monarchy . The association is based in Vienna .

history

After the end of the Second World War in 1945, around 300,000 displaced German-speaking people from Central and Eastern Europe were in Austria. In contrast to Germany, which was obliged by the victorious powers to accept and integrate the refugees from the eastern regions, in Austria no legal basis for the integration of persons considered as foreigners has long been established. They were only allowed to do agricultural and construction work, even basket weaving and slipper making in home work were forbidden to the displaced in some places, according to a Spiegel report. Due to the Allied occupation of Austria, emigration was hardly possible either. In August 1950, the Ministry of the Interior founded an advisory board for refugee issues (also called the "Volksdeutscher Advisory Board"), which was made up of four delegates each from the SPÖ and ÖVP. In particular, the acceleration of naturalization and the recognition of pension claims should be achieved by the advisory board. However, many ethnic German expellees never recognized this advisory board. From 1950 onwards, more and more associations of expellees were founded, which finally formed an umbrella organization in Linz in 1954 with the "Association of People's German Landsmannschaften Österreichs". This should create more coordination and a single point of contact for politics.

In recent years, the VLÖ has mainly supported those entitled to claim living in Austria in restitution proceedings in Serbia Croatia, where compensation laws exist. He also lobbies for the creation of restitution laws in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and the recognition of Slovenian Germans as a minority in Slovenia.

In November 2014, the VLÖ changed its name to its current form. The term "Volksdeutsche Landsmannschaften" was replaced by "Deutsche Altösterreichische Landsmannschaften", which, according to the University of Oldenburg, was "due to the term's political burden".

The aim of the association

The main goal of this association is to preserve the identity of the individual displaced ethnic groups. The association fights injustice and enforces human rights. The association demands moral, legal and economic redress for the injustice committed against the displaced person. Furthermore, he calls for the repeal of decrees and resolutions such as the AVNOJ resolutions and the Beneš decrees .
