Medal of Merit of the Customs Administration of the German Democratic Republic

The Merit Medal of the Customs Administration of the German Democratic Republic was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The medal was donated on May 12, 1967 in three stages; Bronze, silver and gold. They were awarded for merits in fulfilling the duties in the customs administration that had contributed to strengthening and securing the GDR. The award could be made to individuals as well as collectives, whereby an award to persons of the customs administration of socialist brother states was expressly permitted. Furthermore, the award to citizens of the GDR and other socialist countries who were not members of the customs administration.

Appearance and wearing style

The bronze , ver silberte or ver goldete coin with a diameter of 31.5 mm shows on its obverse centrally a Hermes rod ( Caduceus ) or Merkurstab , which is framed by two crossed semi-circular bottom bent upwardly open laurel branches. The symbolism is surrounded by the inscription: MERIT MEDAL OF THE CUSTOMS ADMINISTRATION OF THE GDR . In contrast, the reverse of the medal shows the GDR's national coat of arms in the middle. The medal was worn on a pentagonal red 24 mm wide clasp on the left upper side of the chest in the middle of which, depending on the level awarded, one, two or three 2.5 mm wide green central stripes were woven in, each 2.5 mm apart, with three green stripes for the golden step. The interim clasp was the same as the ribbon.
