Medal of Merit for Merchant Shipping Personnel

The medal of merit for the merchant shipping staff was initially without a medal only as a ribbon medal on January 17, 1918 by King Viktor Emanuel III. donated by Italy . The award was given to the staff of the Italian merchant shipping in recognition of their achievements at sea during the First World War . In 1923 a medal was added to the ribbon, which is the same as the commemorative medal for the Italian-Austrian war . The band shows five white, equally wide, vertical central stripes on a blue base color. The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest.
