The commemorative medal of the Italian-Austrian war ( Italian Medaglia commemorativa della guerra italo-austriaca ) was issued on July 29, 1920 by decree 1241/20 by King Viktor Emanuel III. donated in one step and could be awarded to all those members of the Italian armed forces who participated in the war against Austria-Hungary during the First World War . a. were involved in the mountain war in the period from May 24, 1915 to November 4, 1918. The total number of awards was around 1.8 million.

Appearance and wearing style

The round medal made of bronze from captured cannons has a diameter of 31 mm and shows on its obverse the head bust of the donor in a soldier's uniform and steel helmet, looking to the right. This representation is surrounded by the inscription (War for the unity of Italy 1915 1918). The lapel shows the winged goddess Italia, who stands on shields held up by soldiers. The medal was worn on the upper left chest of the recipient on a repeated six green, white and red ribbon. Entrusted people who had been in combat for less than a year received the ribbon unconditionally. Participants of at least one year received a laurel clasp with the year stamped in the middle 1915, clasps for two years of war 1915and 1916clasps up to 1918, when participating in all four war years , which were all worn on top of each other. There are also clips with the inscription Albania 1919and Albania 1920.

By decree in 1923 it was determined by the highest authorities that the medal could also be awarded to the staff of the Italian merchant shipping and the railway company, to whom a ribbon had previously been donated in 1918. The result was the medal of merit for the merchant shipping personnel and the medal of merit for the railway company personnel .
