Merit to Art and Science

Merit mark for art and science, 1st class

The medal of merit for art and science was donated on April 25, 1908 by Duke Johann Albrecht zu Mecklenburg as regent of the Duchy of Braunschweig .

Order classes

The order consisted of two classes:

  • I. class in gold
  • II. Class in silver

On April 17, 1912, the 2nd class was divided into two sections and awarded as the 2nd class with and without a crown .

Order decoration

The medal has the shape of a highly oval foam coin . On the front it shows the right-facing bust of Duke Carl I in a cuirass . All around the inscription:

CAROL. VS. DG DVX. BRVNSVIC. ET. LVNEBVRG

On the reverse the crowned heraldic shield with the Guelph Steed jumping to the left with the inscription:

MERIT IN KVNST VND SCIENCE

Carrying method

The first class was worn around the neck , the second class on a crimson ribbon with yellow stripes on the left side of the chest.
