Association for Lower Saxony Volkstum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Association for Lower Saxony Ethnicity was founded in Bremen in 1904 . The reason for the foundation of the association was the concern about the loss of bourgeois and rural traditions in the face of industrialization and urban development , but also the threat to cultural assets and progressive interventions in nature. The active group of founders took a Lower Saxon costume festival as an opportunity to point out the dangers they saw and at the same time to win members for the organization. The first members came from the middle-class, and the seat of the association was the city of Bremen from the beginning.

Several working groups were formed within the association, which show the focus and at the same time the scope of the topics:

  • Architecture and building maintenance
  • Applied arts
  • Landscape maintenance and protection of the landscape
  • Manners
  • Costumes
  • Buildings: preservation and revitalization
  • Protection of the flora and fauna
  • Prehistory and Antiquity
  • Folklore
  • Language and literature

As of 1911, the association, like many other organizations of the time, published its yearbooks, but they only appeared every two or three years. Due to the addition of "Bremer Heimatbund", the yearbooks were given the title "Bremen Contributions to Low German Folklore". In 1913 the association began to systematically record field names, initially in the Bremen area. A focus of the association's activities were building advice and monument preservation, whereby he was not limited to the city, but mainly addressed building contractors and builders in rural areas.

Today the association is one of several scientific associations in the Wittheit zu Bremen . At times it was called Verein für Niedersächsisches Volkstum e. V. - Landesverband Bremen in the German Heimatbund . As a regional association, it belongs to the Home and Environment Federation in Germany . The first chairman is Wilhelm Tacke , the managing director is Karl-Heinz Renken.
