In the Association for Scientific Pedagogy (1868 - approx. 1927) educators , especially teachers and pedagogy professors, were organized who assigned themselves to Herbartianism .

The VfWP was created on July 16, 1868 through the merger of the Pedagogical Seminar from Berlin and the Leipzig Seminar . From 25 founding members it grew to 800 members in 1888 and fell into the shadow of other educational movements after the turn of the century; The annual general assembly was canceled for the first time in 1910, war and inflation accelerated the disintegration, the last general assemblies took place in 1921 and 1922, the yearbook was published for the last time in 1927, now renamed the quarterly journal for philosophical pedagogy .

In their statutes, the members committed themselves to the "teachings of Herbartian pedagogy and philosophy as a general point of reference for their teachings and considerations."

The founding chairman was Tuiskon Ziller ; he was followed in 1882 by the Viennese professor Theodor Vogt and from 1906 to 1922 by Wilhelm Rein . Karl Volkmar Stoy was second chairman from 1870, but resigned in 1876 due to publication disputes. Ernst von Sallwürk resigned from the club as one of Ziller's most determined opponents. Friedrich Wilhelm Dörpfeld , who remained an official member until his death, abstained from any cooperation. Otto Willmann turned away from pure teaching in the 1870s.

The association held a three-day general assembly every year at Pentecost and published a yearbook, which mainly contained original contributions from its prominent members. Contributions to the discussion appeared under the title Explanations , from 1908 negotiations in the magazine for philosophy and pedagogy .
