Friedrich Wilhelm Dörpfeld

Friedrich Wilhelm Dörpfeld (born March 8, 1824 in Sellscheid near Wermelskirchen , † October 27, 1893 in Ronsdorf , today in Wuppertal ) was a German teacher ( Herbartianer ). He is the father of the archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld as well as Anna Carnap and Agnes von Rohden .

Life

Dörpfeld was born the son of a master blacksmith . After finishing school, he attended the teacher training college in Moers / Niederrhein, which he completed as a so-called preparation teacher . His first educational sphere of activity was the Zahnsche Anstalt in Fild , a private boys' school. Four years later he switched to the one-class primary school Heidt in Heidt or (formerly Heydt), a small town near Ronsdorf. After the position of main teacher at the Lutheran parish school in Wupperfeld (today: Wuppertal - Barmen ) became vacant in September 1848 , the electoral committee of this school appointed Friedrich Wilhelm Dörpfeld as main teacher in 1849 and a few years later as rector.

In 1857 Dörpfeld founded the Evangelisches Schulblatt . He was also involved in the establishment and management of the Association of Protestant Teachers and School Friends in Rhineland and Westphalia , the German Evangelical School Association and the so-called Bible conferences for teachers . Theologically he knew that he was connected to pietism , but did not necessarily join any of the various directions. In 1880 Dörpfeld retired and initially moved to Gerresheim near Düsseldorf . After his daughter Anna married the businessman Joh. Sebulon Carnap, he moved with the young family to Wuppertal-Ronsdorf in 1887, where he died in 1893 after a long illness.

meaning

Dörpfeld was a primary school teacher who advocated self-governing school communities and organized teacher training as well as the development of curricula . The Dörpfeld, shaped by Johann Friedrich Herbart , had an impact on Franz Ludwig Zahn and the Moerser preparatory institute founded by him . Dörpfeld has developed a general education concept in which social studies , natural history and religious education were combined. As the first author, he not only set a consistent focus on realities, but was also the first to use the technical term `` Sachunterricht ''.

In Ronsdorf a school and a street is named after him that leads out in the direction of Heidt . A street in Düsseldorf-Gerresheim also bears his name.
