Association June 17, 1953

The June 17, 1953 Association is a non-profit organization that is committed to protecting the victims of the SED regime in the GDR , especially activists of the June 17, 1953 uprising .

history

The association was registered on October 3, 1957 as the successor to the "June 17, 1953 Committee". The main goals of the association are to commemorate June 17, 1953, and to come to terms with the political persecutions associated with it. In 1964, the “Working Group June 17, 1953” split off from the association in order to independently preserve the memory of June 17, 1953, while the remaining “June 17, 1953 Association” pursued the political goals of the popular uprising.

Board

The board consists of the chairman Heike Eichenmüller , the managing director Andre Rühring and the treasurer Tatjana Sterneberg . Eberhard Diepgen , Helmut Müller-Enbergs and Horst Rudolf Übelacker sit on the advisory board . Dirk Jungnickel is the association's spokesman. Honorary chairman (since June 17, 2019) is Carl-Wolfgang Holzapfel , who was chairman from 2002 to 2019.

The members of the association are predominantly strike leaders, activists and supporters of the popular uprising of June 17, 1953 or their relatives.

Club activities

The association promotes public awareness of the popular uprising of June 17, 1953 as a revolutionary event of national importance. The association is responsible for the central memorial in Berlin. In addition, the association supports the introduction of a public holiday to commemorate June 17, 1953.

With its website, the association provides a discussion forum on various political issues of current affairs. Events of the association are discussed. There was discussion about Siegmar Faust , the Hohenschönhausen Memorial and the Association of Victims of Socialism (VOS).

The association on June 17, 1953 published several brochures: on the 40th anniversary “Auf, Europa, zum Freiheit” and on the 50th anniversary “Searching for traces. Heroes of Humanity ”.

The association spoke out against the nomination and election of Joachim Gauck to the office of Federal President.
