history

The Association of Friends of the Technical University of Darmstadt was founded on June 29, 1918 as an association of Friends of the Technical University of Darmstadt in the lecture hall of the Chemistry Institute, built in 1895, on Hochschulstrasse. It has around 2,500 members (as of 2016) and assets of around € 2 million. The association also manages a number of dependent foundations that have been added over the past 50 years. According to the statutes, which have not been significantly changed since 1918, the aim of the association is to promote science in research and teaching, especially at the Technical University of Darmstadt.

When it was founded in 1918, it was intended to raise funds from a. to receive from the economy to support the ailing technical university after the end of the First World War . Since Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig was present when it was founded, the association was called the "Ernst Ludwig University Society". The main initiators for founding the association were the mechanical engineering professor Otto Berndt and the then rector Hermann Finger , both of whom were appointed honorary members at the 8th Annual General Meeting in 1926. The foundation was prepared by a founding committee to which forty members from the university and business belonged.

The association was founded as a registered association. The organs of the association are the board of directors, the board of directors and the annual general meeting.

Shortly after it was founded, the association had around 200 members and a considerable amount of donations. In the first two decades, the association supported the TH Darmstadt in particular with the acquisition of land and the construction of buildings (e.g. Institute for Cellulose Chemistry, Institute for Tanning Chemistry, High Voltage Hall, Sports Hall).

In the Nazi regime, the association was partially absorbed by the rulers. From 1936 until the end of the Second World War, Gauleiter Jakob Sprenger was won as patron of the association and was usually present at the annual general meetings. In 1938 the general meeting followed an invitation from the Gauleiter to a wine tasting.

As part of the "Centenary 1836-1936" of the TH Darmstadt, the association organized an "anniversary donation" in 1936. The main organizers were the treasurer Alwin Walther and Hans Bochow . The campaign brought in around 450,000 Reichsmarks. However, this clearly missed the target of 2 million that we had set ourselves.

As a result of the currency reform in 1948 , the association found itself in a financial emergency, from which it was gradually able to free itself again, parallel to the economic development of the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1950s. The chairman at this time was the entrepreneur Wilhelm Köhler .
