Constitutional Court (Belgium)

The Constitutional Court ( Dutch Grondwettelijk Hof ,? / I French Cour constitutionnelle ) is the Belgian constitutional court. In the Belgian constitutional state, it is responsible for examining the legally binding legal norms with the constitution as well as with the regulations on the distribution of competences between the federal state , communities and regions. The judgments of the Constitutional Court are enforceable and not subject to appeal. Audio file / audio sample

The farm was a specialized and independent of the legislative, executive and judicial power judicial institution designed.

The court is composed of twelve judges , assisted by speakers and two chancellors. The administrative staff comprises around fifty employees.

Compared to the constitutional courts of other states, the Belgian Constitutional Court has some peculiarities: The twelve judges not only represent the two Belgian regions of Flanders and Wallonia in a balanced way, six of them are not fully lawyers at all, but experienced politicians who finally leave active politics have to play the role of a chief “referee”.

The court was in on 1 October 1984. Senate under the name of Arbitration (Dutch , Arbitragehof French Cour d'arbitrage ) founded and contributes since May 2007, the present name. The seat of the court is Brussels .
