Constitutional referendum in Liberia 1847
The constitutional referendum in Liberia 1847 was carried out on September 27, 1847 in Liberia , which a few months earlier, on July 26, 1847, had declared itself independent. At this point in time, the Liberian government only controlled a narrow coastal strip of what is now Liberia, populated by the immigrant Ameriko-Liberians . The first constitution of Liberia to be voted on was supposed to create the office of president with executive power and a two-chamber system with a Senate and a House of Representatives .
The constitution restricted the right to vote to people of African descent and to those who owned land. Only 279 eligible voters took part in the vote and accepted the constitution with almost 80% approval. Approval and rejection were clearly distributed regionally: In Monrovia , Millsburg , Bassa Cove and Bexley , 100% of those who voted supported the constitution, in Sinoe 100% voted against. There was a more mixed result in the other three villages in which the vote was held.
Liberia's constitution, confirmed in this way, remained in force until 1984.
