Road turtle
A traffic turtle is an illuminated guide device and is part of the street equipment . It is used to make the traffic management on traffic islands clear to the vehicle driver , especially in the dark . The body of the road turtle often consists of a cast steel frame that is partially embedded in the ground. This includes a yellow Makrolon dome with an underlying illuminant .
Variants with a body as a concrete hemisphere or a segment of a concrete hemisphere with small yellow reflectors are also referred to as traffic turtles.
history
In the 1920s, a “nightly illuminated warning sign at dangerous crossroads” was included in the StVO, but no longer in the ordinance of March 16, 1928. In Germany, the traffic turtle, in contrast to other guidance systems such as delineator posts , was not a traffic system according to the StVO . In the 1950s, so-called traffic turtles were placed at intersections and junctions in Berlin. Some municipalities have not yet replaced existing road turtles with other facilities.
