history

The church was planned as the main church of New Russia , which was newly conquered after the 5th Russian Turkish War (1768–1774) , and should even surpass St. Peter's Basilica in Rome . The cathedral - built in the style of classicism - was first mentioned in 1787 in the town planning plans for the newly founded Yekaterinoslav and officially founded that same year. The foundation stone was laid in 1787 by Catherine II and Joseph II . However, the construction work did not take place until 1830-1835. From 1930 to 1988 there were no services and from 1975 to 1988 there was a museum of religion and atheism. After an earthquake in 1888, the building's facade cracked. During the Second World War , the building suffered considerable damage and was not restored until 1975.
