The Soborna Square ( Ukrainian Соборна площа ) is the oldest and most historically significant place on Dmytro-Jawornyzkyj Prospect in Dnipro ( district Sobor ) and is home to architectural monuments of national importance. Its area is also worth highlighting, because with its 120,000 m² it is one of the largest squares in Europe.

history

The square, which was first planned by the French architect Claude Geru ( Russian Клод Геру ) in 1786, was developed in the first urban plan for what was then Yekaterinoslav. In its more than 200-year history, the appearance of the square has been changed many times, both architecturally and scenically. It is home to at least four different architectural styles , including classicism and art nouveau .

As often as its appearance has been changed, the name has also been changed. In the first urban planning plans , the square was still called Cathedral Square / "Domplatz" ( Russian Соборная transcription "Sabornaja"). In the middle of the 19th century the local residents called the square the “fairground” ( Russian Ярмарочная (площадь) ). After the opening of the Transfiguration Cathedral , the name of the square was changed back to "Cathedral Square" ( Russian Соборная ), and this was retained by the square until the October Revolution , in the course of which the square was given its current name "October Square" in 1919.
