History and architecture
Originally there was a wooden church from the end of the 17th century on the site of today's church , which had to be demolished because of its dilapidation. The Transfiguration Church was built from 1741 to 1746. The then Eparch von Buda Vasilije (Dimitrijević) and an unknown Austrian architect are considered to be the custodians of the church .
The popular name Gerberkirche comes from the fact that tanners in particular financed the construction of the church. The church, located on a small hill away from the city center, is one of the most beautiful and important Serbian Orthodox churches in Hungary. It is considered a milestone in Serbian architecture from the late Baroque to classicism.
The single-nave church was initially built without the high steeple, which was built from 1777 to 1778. The rich stone decoration on the west wall of the church is in the style of the transition from baroque to classicism .
The iconostasis was made by Russian icon painters and carpenters from Kiev from 1745 to 1746. The icons are made in typical Serbian icon painting. The iconostasis with its richly ornamented icons and a gold background is considered one of the most beautiful of the Serbian Orthodox Church of the 18th century .
