Verklungene Feste is a ballet by Pia and Pino Mlakar ( libretto and choreography ) to music by François Couperin and arranged by Richard Strauss . The artists themselves called their work dance visions from two centuries . It was premiered on April 5, 1941 at the National Theater in Munich . The conductor was Clemens Krauss . A performance lasts about 50 minutes.

Paris in the 1830s. The Duke asks the prima ballerina and the first solo dancer of the Paris Opera to revive the old court festivals from the Rococo period. The dancer is not happy about it. They would prefer to perform the emerging romantic tip dance.

The plot leads to a rococo festival. The following numbers are presented:

This is followed by the allegory “Flora and Zephyr”, in which the dancers review the history of ballet from the baroque to the romantic. The Duke is confronted by his ancestors ( Allemande , Moderato ; Minuet , Andante ).

Continuation of the storyline: The Duke slowly wakes up. He realizes that he has only dreamed the festivities that have ended.

More choreographies

Another choreography by Victor Gsovsky was created under the title Couperin Suite . John Neumeier created a completely different choreography to the music of Strauss / Couperin in 2008.
