The publishing house for culture and science (VKW) based in Bonn is a science publisher . As early as 1850, Friedrich Wilhelm Schirrmacher was self-publishing books with a historical focus as a professor at the University of Bonn. In 1979 the VKW was started in its current legal form by Brigitte Schirrmacher as a bookseller and her husband Klaus Schirrmacher and initially financed by Bernd Schirrmacher .
