Friedrich Wilhelm Schirrmacher (born April 28, 1824 in Danzig , † June 19, 1904 in Rostock ) was a German historian .

The son of a school principal passed his school leaving examination in Gdansk in 1845. From 1845 to 1847 he studied history and philosophy in Berlin and then from 1846 to 1847 in Bonn. During his studies in 1846 he became a member of the Frankonia fraternity in Bonn . Then he returned to Berlin. When Leopold von Ranke he received his doctorate 1848th In 1849 he passed the state examination for teaching. In the period from 1849 to 1854 he worked as an assistant teacher at a Berlin grammar school and as a senior teacher (1854–1866). From 1863 Schirrmacher taught as a history professor at the Royal Knight Academy in Liegnitz in Silesia. In Liegnitz he published the multi-volume work on Emperor Friedrich II from 1859 , which earned him the Prize of the Wedekind Foundation of the University of Göttingen and the call to the University of Rostock (1866). There he taught as a full professor for 38 years. In Rostock he published the document book of the city of Liegnitz up to 1455 in 1866. In addition, he turned to Spanish research, in 1881 the first volume of his History of Spain appeared, beginning with the 12th century, followed by three more volumes from 1890 to 1902, which continued Spanish history until 1516.

He received numerous honors and offices at the Rostock University. He was second (from 1874), first and chief librarian (from 1886) of the university library , from 1869 on the examination committee for teaching at secondary schools and from 1871 director of the academic coin cabinet, in 1878/79 he was the rector's office University and was Dean of the Philosophical Faculty in 1871/72 and 1893/94.

Schirrmacher was particularly known for his works on the Hohenstaufen . In research on the Reformation, he gained importance as the discoverer and editor of the files and protocols of the Marburg Religious Discussion .
