When a number of globetrotters set out to explore the world beyond European borders and the usual tourist centers in the 1970s , they found that although there was literature about their travel destinations, it did not meet the requirements of an individual trip. One of them, the publisher Peter Rump , recalls:

“In the few travel guides that were on the market for the Indonesian island [Bali] at the time, all the Balinese temples and ruins were described. However, it did not contain any practical tips on accommodation or travel routes. "

In addition to these unanswered practical travel questions, language barriers also presented a challenge:

“Before my stay on the island of Lombok, I had to learn Indonesian. The only phrasebook I found had sentences like 'Where is the nearest tram stop?' However, there are no trams in all of Indonesia. "

It was important to the authors not only to provide travelers with the most detailed and up-to-date information possible, but also to open their eyes to peculiarities and cultural differences and to take the first steps towards “ gentle tourism ”.

The next step was to make the information and experiences gathered on site available to other travelers. In the mid-1970s, the authors' community “Globetrotters write for globetrotters” was formed. Peter Rump published Bali & Lombok in 1981 . The Globetrotter Handbook about the dream island (?) Bali and its previously undiscovered sister Lombok as the 19th volume in this series.

In 1984/85 the publishing group Individual Travel e. V. (VIR), to which the publishers Brigitte Blume, Erika Därr, Edgar Hoff, Rainer Lössl, Peter Meyer, Peter Rump, Heribert Seul, Wil Tondok and Ludmilla Tüting belonged. From then on, the travel guides were published under the “Reise Know-How” brand. While the number of publishers combined in the publishing group has shrunk to four (Rump, Hermann, Tondok, Grundmann, as of the end of 2011), the number of titles and products published has increased. The target group now goes beyond backpackers.

Reise Know-How Verlag not only publishes travel guides for long-distance travel, but also for European destinations. City destinations are envisaged with the CityGuide and CityTrip series . Following the philosophy of the publisher, the series Kauderwelsch phrasebooks are published which are based on everyday travel and serve to communicate with the locals (so far approx. 160 languages in 230 volumes). The culture guides published in the Kulturschock series provide deeper insights into history, culture and mentality . Maps are also being published as part of the “world mapping project” . The music compositions of the soundtrip series provide an acoustic foretaste of the travel destination.
