Vernich (noble family)

The family of Count Vernich de Turan ( Croatian Vernić Kiš Turanjska ) is a Croatian-Hungarian noble family of the primeval nobility . In the 17th century, members of the family were entrusted as politicians with higher offices in Hungary , Croatia and Austria . Some also became officers. There were nobility awards, marriages in noble families and acquisition of rural property.

history

The Vernich family (de Turan, after the town of Turanj ) comes from the region of Agramer County . The family history goes back to the 13th century. Juraj Vernich, notary of the Hungarian Chamber , received a letter of nobility and coat of arms from King Ferdinand II on May 22, 1630 . The Vernich family carries the nobility title "de Turan" (Kiš Turanjska). The Counts of Vernich were very wealthy and influential. They owned several castles, forests, many lands (including Turanj ) and were one of the ruling families of Turopolje .

The coat of arms is divided into blue and red, at the top a silver crescent moon and a gold star, at the bottom a triple natural-colored rock on the green ground, with a black eagle on top. Gem: a golden lion holds a closed green laurel wreath with a golden star in the right front paw; in his left paw he is holding a branch with two golden apples. Helmet covers: gold-blue and silver-red.

Possessions

For the Vernich, as one of the ruling families in Turopolje, Lukavec Castle was one of the family seats for several years. In 1664 Juraj Vernić took over the "Sveta Jana" (Black Tower) tower, which is located in today's Turanj. The tower and the fortress, around the tower, were used for defense against the Ottoman Empire. Today only remnants of the originally 8 meter high tower remain. In the course of the 18th century, through Ignatz Vernić, the Griče settlement came into the possession of the Vernić family. In 1716, Bishop Franjo Josip V commissioned the construction of a new church. However, the completion of the church was carried out by his successor Gabrijel Patačić. Franjo Josip V is the patron saint of Kaptol as thanks for building the church .
