history

There is evidence that this area has been continuously inhabited since the Iron Age . Several sites from this time testify to this, which are basically graves. Important artefacts such as urns and sacrificial vessels (askos) were found in the tombs. However, many of the tombs have been damaged and robbed by looters throughout history. Most of the finds are now in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb .

Kaptol got its name after the Požeg cooperative in Kaptol (Capitulum ecclesiae beati Petri de Posega), which was founded as an institution by the Catholic Church around 1220. This Kaptol thus had the office of a credible place (locus credibilis) and even its own seal. It had the permission and duty to settle various disputes between nobles and church institutions. Such an administrative-formal unit later played an important role in the civil life of the Croatians in this area. The oldest document in which this Kaptol is mentioned is now in the Hungarian State Archives in Budapest . From 1537 to 1691 Kaptol was under Turkish rule. The last Turkish ruler over Kaptol was Dizdar-aga, who lived in the Kaptol fort . The original plan was to destroy the fort before it could be conquered by the Turks. After the liberation from the Turks, Kaptol became a pastor again in 1700 and only slowly coped with the crises it got into during the Turkish rule.

economy

The slow development has also left its mark on the economy and so the most important economic bases are still today: agriculture, viticulture, animal husbandry, forestry, construction and wood processing. Most of the firms (46.9%) belong to the primary sector, 20.7% to the secondary sector and 32.49% to the tertiary sector.

population

Due to the historical, but also the political and economic events, several different nations are represented in Kaptol: 97.24% are Croats, 1.84% Czech, 0.23% Serbs. In addition, Albanians, Germans, Slovaks, Montenegrins and Russians live in Kaptol. However, the Czechs had the greatest influence in Kaptol. Most of them immigrated to Kaptol in the second half of the 19th century. Shortly afterwards, just as many Czechs lived in Kaptol as Croatians. The Czech language and culture strongly influenced everyday life in Kaptol. On January 25, 1923, the Czech-Slovak Society was founded in Kaptol. Their aim is to spread the Czech culture with dance and song performances. Some of these events still take place in Kaptol today, such as B. Our jaro and harvest festivities .

Sights and clubs

In the middle of Kaptol are the ruins of the Kaptol castle, also known as the "old town". It is an old Gothic castle with round half towers, surrounded by a moat, which is empty today. This castle initially served as the seat of the Požeg cooperative in Kaptol and later also as a church. The ruins of the Church of St. Peter are also located in the fort. In 1772 a new church was built which, after several restorations, now serves as the parish church.

The Kaptol Volunteer Fire Brigade has existed since 1893 . Their buildings and large halls also serve as a fairground for various events. One of the most important clubs was the Zvijezda (Stern) football club , which was founded in 1938. For fifty years the club played a central role in Kaptol's sporting life. Football is no longer so popular in Kaptol today.
The primary school, named after the Croatian writer Vilim Korajac, is also important for Kaptol . In recent years it has been modernized more and more so that it is now one of the most modern schools in the county. In 2007 a large gym was built in which various sporting events are to take place from now on.
