history

In the middle ages

Due to the medieval archaeological means, we learn of the first attempts to found a Slavonian area in this area. The name Pleternica was first mentioned in 1270. In the Middle Ages it was also called Saint Nicholas, after the parish of Saint Nicholas. During the 14th and 15th centuries, there were 80 noble families in Požega County. At that time there were around 30 castles and fortresses . Valuable monuments of sacred architecture from the Middle Ages have been registered and preserved in the area of the Pleternice parish . The most valuable are the Gothic Church of Saint Dimitrij, Church of Saint Michael, the Chapel of Saints Kuzma and Damjan in Baroque style and the Church of All Saints.

Pleternica during the Turkish rule

In 1536 the Turks conquered Pleternica and it fell under their rule. During the 155-year rule, Pleternica was one of the important transport hubs. All the while the Turks tried to convert the Croats to Islam , but the strong Christian will of the Croats remained unbroken. The Christian citizens had to serve in the Turkish army, give away a tenth of their harvest and, among other things, pay Harač taxes to the Sultan in Carigrad.

Pleternica during the Habsburg Monarchy

All of Slavonia , including Pleternica, was liberated from the Turks in 1688 . Since then, Pleternica has been under the rule of many feudal lords, the most important of which were Ivan Teodor, Baron Ivan Peterffi and Jakob Svetić. In 1997 Pleternica got the status of a town.

economy and trade

In Pleternica, the economy and trade developed very early because of its favorable geographical position. A branching of the railway lines and the meeting of several roads favor the development of transit tourism. In 1882/83 a savings community was founded, which was one of the ten first savings communities in Slavonia. In the 20th century the traders were organized in the Croatian Traders Association in Pleternica. 65 dealers took part. The local association organized cheap goods and sufficient markets for its members; Among other things, the association dealt with the better position of traders in society, the training of young people and the construction of trading schools, the organization of festivals, meetings and lectures for the traders.
