Verolme Verenigde Scheepswerven
The Dutch shipbuilding group Verolme Verenigde Scheepswerven NV (VVSW), better known internationally as Verolme United Shipyards , existed from 1958 to 1971. The shipyard group was the largest Dutch shipbuilding company for several years.
history
The shipyard group was created on August 10, 1958 through the merger of four shipyards owned by the Dutch shipbuilding magnate Cornelis Verolme . The following shipyards formed the founding group:
- Verolme Machinefabriek IJsselmonde in IJsselmonde
- Verolme Scheepswerf Alblasserdam in Alblasserdam
- Verolme Scheepswerf Heusden in Heusden
- Verolme Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (VDSM) in Rozenburg
The Verolme Group flourished due to the development of building ever larger ship units and was able to integrate the following other shipyards into its association in the following years:
- Verolme Cork Dockyard in Cobh, Ireland
-
Verolme Estaleiros Reunidos do Brasil in Jacuecanga, near Angra dos Reis ( RJ ), Brazil
(since 2000 subsidiary of Keppel Corporation , Singapore, named Keppel BrasFELS) - Verolme Elektra in Maassluis
- Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij in Amsterdam
In the course of the 1960s, the European shipbuilding industry came under increasing pressure from competition from the cheaper Japanese shipyards. After the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij with the shipyard Koninklijke Maatschappij “De Schelde” and the Motorenfabriek Thomassen had already merged on March 4, 1966 to form the Rijn-Schelde Machinefabrieken en Scheepswerven (RSMS), Wilton-Fijenoord joined forces on July 3, 1968 Government to the association. Also under government pressure, the financially troubled Verolme Verenigde Scheepswerven joined the group on January 1, 1971, which then operated as Rijn-Schelde-Verolme Machinefabrieken en Scheepswerven (RSV). On April 6, 1983, the RSV went bankrupt.
After the bankrupt group was broken up, some viable shipyards continued to operate and others were sold or closed.
