Please note the note on the applicable legal version.

The Regulation on dietary foods , shortly diet Regulation (DiätV) , is a German law. It defines dietetic foods as foods that are intended for a particular diet, i.e. for people with certain metabolic disorders as well as for babies and toddlers.

The regulation contains, among other things, provisions for additives .

It was originally adopted on June 20, 1963 and published again in 2005 ( Federal Law Gazette I p. 1161 ).

Ban on diabetic foods

On September 24, 2010 the Federal Council decided on the proposal of the Committee for Agricultural Policy and Consumer Protection (AV) and the Health Committee (G) and in accordance with the recommendations of the specialist societies (e.g. the DGE ) and the BfR ( Federal Institute for Risk Assessment ), " the [to] delete specific requirements for food for diabetics and to adapt the diet regulation to the requirements of Community law . "This meant that, with a transition period until 2012, the production of food with the note 'suitable for diabetics' for the German market had to be discontinued . Since diabetes mellitus, according to the current state of scientific knowledge, is not a pure "diabetes disease", but also affects the protein and fat metabolism , no benefit can be proven for sugar substitutes . Thus, the same dietary recommendations apply to people with diabetes as to the general population. References to diet foods that diabetics can enjoy them carefree are therefore misleading.

At the same time the bread unit defined in this law was abolished.
