The ordinance of the Federal Minister of Economics and Labor on the rules for piercing and tattooing by cosmetics (beauty care) traders of February 14, 2003 is a statutory ordinance in Austria . It contains, among other things, the hygiene requirements for the facilities of tattooists and piercers .

According to Section 4 (2), the devices, paints and fabrics are only available from companies that are authorized to place them on the domestic market.

According to § 5, the written consent of the pierced or tattooed person must be obtained and the explanation of the person must be documented in writing. A brief description of the service provided and the batch numbers of the colors and materials used must be documented and kept available for a period of ten years. A copy of the documents mentioned must be given to the customer.

In 2008 the ordinance was changed and the age limits were specified.

Tattoos are allowed from the age of 16 with the consent of the legal guardian. A piercing requires parental consent for people under the age of 18. This requirement of consent does not apply to minors between 14 and 18 years of age if the pierced area is expected to heal within 24 days. Piercing minors under the age of 14 is prohibited.
