First Nations Assembly

The Assembly of First Nations ( English : Assembly of First Nations , AFN ; French : Assemblée des Premières Nations , APN ) is an organization of the Indian peoples in Canada . The goals of the organization are to uphold the rights, contractual conditions and demands of the more than 600 First Nations . It was founded in 1982 as the successor organization to the National Indian Brotherhood , which had existed since 1968 .

First Nations leaders meet annually to set policy guidelines in resolutions. For the First Nations, this gathering has both political and cultural significance.

The National Chief (Leader of Nations) is elected every three years. It was Shawn Atleo until 2014, followed by Perry Bellegarde . The structure of the organization was established in 1985 in the Charter of the Assembly of First Nations . The main organs are the General Assembly (First Nations-in-Assembly) , the Confederation (Confederacy of Nations) , the Executive Committee (Executive Committee) , the Secretariat (Secretariat) and the Council of Elders (Council of Elders) .

In addition to the Assembly of First Nations, there are two other organizations that represent the interests of indigenous peoples on a national level, the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami for the Inuit and the Métis National Council for the Métis .
