ICD-10 online (WHO version 2019)

An isolated flattened vertebral body with a preserved intervertebral disc is called a flat vertebra , Latin vertebra plana . The condition is also known as Calvé's disease .

A generalized flattening of the vertebral bodies is called platyspondyly .

The disease usually occurs in the thoracic or lumbar spine , mainly in children between the ages of 4 and 7, and is classified as aseptic bone necrosis . It is characterized by the widening of the adjacent intervertebral spaces and the absence of neurological complications .

causes

If a vertebra plana is found on an x-ray of the spine, one of the following two diseases is probably present:

Multiple flattened vertebral bodies are found in osteopetrosis or less often in osteomalacia .

More rarely, the cause can be a fungal infection.

Destruction as a result of spondylitis or (bacterial) osteomyelitis , in which the intervertebral space is narrowed, must be distinguished.

therapy

The necessary treatment depends on the underlying disease. The more common ones listed typically result in spontaneous reconstruction of the vertebral body.
