Treaty of Casalanza

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Treaty of Casalanza ended the Austro-Neapolitan War and was signed on May 20, 1815 between the Napoleonic Kingdom of Naples and the Empire of Austria and its ally Great Britain .

After the decisive defeats in the Battle of Tolentino and the Battle of San Germano , the Napoleonic King of Naples, Joachim Murat, fled to Corsica , whereupon the subsequent commander-in-chief of the Neapolitan army, General Michele Carrascosa , applied for peace. The contract was signed by Pietro Colletta (as Plenipotentiary of General Carrascosa), Adam Albert von Neipperg (Supreme Commander of the Austrian Forces) and Lord Burghersh (British Plenipotentiary).

The terms of peace were not particularly strict on the defeated Neapolitans. All Neapolitan generals were allowed to retain their rank and the boundaries of the Kingdom of Naples remained unchanged. The terms of the treaty were only the restoration of the rule of Ferdinand I as King of the Two Sicilies , the handing over of all prisoners of war and the laying down of the arms of all Neapolitan garrisons, except Pescara , Ancona and Gaeta . These three cities were not under the control of General Carrascosa and were still under siege. All three garrisons eventually surrendered, although the siege of Gaeta lasted until August, long after Napoleon's defeat at the Battle of Waterloo .
