The Whitewater Township is about 35 km west of the Mississippi , which forms the border with Illinois . The mouth of the Ohio near Cairo at the intersection of the states of Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky is about 90 km southeast.

The Whitewater Township is traversed by the Whitewater River, which flows into the Headwater Diversion Channel near Whitewater in the Hubble Township further south . To the north of Whitewater Township is the Maintz Wildlife Preserve , a 342-acre recreation area. In the center of the township is Cedar Lake , which was created by damming a tributary of the Whitewater River.
The Whitewater Township borders within Cape Girardeau County in the north and northeast on the Apple Creek Township , in the east on the Byrd Township and in the south on the Kinder Township . To the west, the township borders on Bollinger County .
