The Cape Girardeau Township is one of 10 townships in Cape Girardeau County in the southeast of the US -amerikanischen state of Missouri .

geography

Cape Girardeau Township is located on the Mississippi , which forms the border with Illinois . The mouth of the Ohio near Cairo at the intersection of the states of Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky is about 60 km to the southeast.

The Cape Girardeau Township is 37 ° 18'46 "north latitude and 89 ° 32'25" west longitude and extends over 182.5 km², which is spread over 173.7 km² of land and 8.8 km² of water.

The southern border of the township is formed by the Headwater Diversion Channel , an artificially created flood canal that takes in a number of other rivers in addition to the Castor River and flows into the Mississippi south of the city of Cape Girardeau.

The Cape Girardeau Township borders within Cape Girardeau County in the southwest to the Welch Township , to the west to the Hubble Township , to the northwest to the Byrd Township and to the north to the Randol Township . In the south, the township borders on Scott County . To the east, the Mississippi forms the border with Union and Alexander Counties in Illinois.

Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge

The Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge connects the city of Cape Girardeau with East Cape Girardeau in Illinois.

Interstate 55 , which is the shortest connection from St. Louis to Memphis , runs parallel to the Mississippi through the township . In the northwest of the township, US Highway 61 crosses , which also runs parallel to the Mississippi.

Missouri State Routes 34 , 74 and 177 also meet in Cape Girardeau Township .

A BNSF Railway runs through Cape Girardeau Township and runs along the entire length of the Mississippi.

The nearest airport is Cape Girardeau Regional Airport , located immediately south of the city but already in Scott County .

At the 2010 census , the township had 40,563 residents. The population of the township lives mainly in the city of Cape Girardeau (with the status of " City "), which forms the center of the entire region. A small part of the southern parts of the city are already in Scott County.

A smaller part of the population lives outside of settlements scattered across the township and in the community of Dutchtown (with the status of " Village "), which is mostly in the Hubble Township.
