Friedrich Haerlin (born February 24, 1857 in Gaisburg ; † April 28, 1941 in Hamburg ) was a German hotelier and founder of the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg.

life and work

After completing his commercial apprenticeship, Haerlin worked in an import company in Stuttgart from 1875 and moved to Geneva in 1876 - to get to know the world - where he found work as a kitchen boy in the station restaurant. On November 1, 1876, Herrmann Blaile, the owner of the Chantepoulet café-restaurant, hired him as a waiter. Haerlin soon took on more interesting jobs, including at the “Grandhotel Thunerhof” in Thun , the “Grand Hotel d'Orient” in Menton and the “ Baur au Lac ” in Zurich .

In 1891 he married Thekla Toussaint from Bremen. On May 1, 1893, the couple took over the management of the “Hotel Bellevue” in Thun. In 1894 the first son, Otto, in 1895 the son Wilhelm, in the spring of 1896 the daughter Frieda and in 1897 the son Fritz was born.

On February 24, 1897, on his 40th birthday, Haerlin bought the bankrupt Hotel Zu den vier Jahreszeiten , a narrow house on the Neuer Jungfernstieg in Hamburg, for 420,100 Reichsmarks . He gradually acquired the neighboring houses No. 9 to 14 until he had the street front together and in 1904 had a uniform facade. In 1911 the hotel had 140 living rooms, bedrooms and 50 bathrooms.

In 1932 Friedrich Haerlin handed the hotel over to his son Fritz (1897–1975). The hotel remained in family ownership until 1989 when it was sold to the Japanese Aoki Group for around 105 million euros. Much of the furniture bought by Friedrich Haerlin at the turn of the century was still in use in the hotel in 2001.

The Haerlin restaurant on the ground floor of the hotel is named after Haerlin. It has been awarded two Michelin stars and 19 Gault Millau points under Christoph Rüffer since 2012 and is known for its classic French cuisine.

At the Hamburg cemetery in Ohlsdorf , near grid square M 23 (south of the water tower ), on the family grave site there is one pillow stone each for Friedrich and Fritz Haerlin.
