Very Easy Rodent-Oriented Netwide Index to Computerized Archives
Veronica , short for Very Easy Rodent-Oriented Netwide Index to Computerized Archives , is a menu-oriented search service for the Internet service Gopher (protocol: gopher: //) developed in 1992 at the University of Nevada, Reno , which was used until around the mid- 1990s Used for years and then superseded by the World Wide Web and search engines ; In the transition period Veronica was used via WWW forms, today there are hardly any Gopher or Veronica servers.
Functionally, Veronica did for Gopherspace what the Archie search service did for FTP .
Veronica indexed the title of files and directories of all Gopherserver that the "mother" -Gopher the University of Minnesota are known, and all Gopherserver referenced by these servers. A major advantage over the Archie search engine was that the titles were not limited to the file name, but could also consist of entire sentences. Logical queries with or, and and not links of the search terms are also possible.
