Vesna Parun

Vesna Parun (born April 10, 1922 in Zlarin , † October 25, 2010 in Stubičke Toplice ) was one of the most respected Croatian writers . She became known through her poems.

Life

Vesna Parun and her family lived in difficult living conditions. Her father Ante often changed jobs and was unemployed for a while, so Vesna Parun spent part of her childhood and youth with her aunt in Split and Šibenik. She graduated from elementary school on the island of Vis and then attended grammar school in Šibenik and Split, where she graduated from high school in 1940. She was an excellent student and was earning her own money with tutoring at the age of 14. After graduating from high school, she began studying Romance languages ​​at the Philosophical Faculty in Zagreb. She had to break off her studies because of the war.

After the end of the war she began to study again, but now devoted herself to philosophy. In 1947 Vesna Parun fell ill with typhus. At this time she also went through crises caused by an unhappy love. Because of these severe strokes of fate, she dropped out again.

From 1962 to 1967 Vesna Parun lived in Bulgaria, where she married and divorced again immediately. The result of her stay in Bulgaria are her numerous translations of Bulgarian poetry. On her return she lived in Zagreb, where she worked as a freelance writer. For health reasons, she left Zagreb a few years later and went to the Donja Stubica thermal baths . There she wrote some of her works.

Vesna Parun devoted herself completely to literature and was the first female writer in Croatian literature to live exclusively from literature and for literature. She was one of the most famous contemporary poets in Croatia.

Works

Vesna Parun started writing at an early age. Her first poem Pramaljeće was published in 1932 in the magazine Anđeo Čuvar (The Guardian Angel). This was followed by the poem Zov (The Call), which was published in the magazine Sjeme (The Seed) in 1938 . Besides poetry, she also wrote dramas. The children's poem played an important role in her poetry. Over 60 books of poetry and prose have been published and four of their dramas have been staged.

Awards

Vesna Parun received numerous important awards for her work. She received the Matica Hrvatska award for her collection of poems Pjesme (Songs) (1948), the City of Zagreb award for the Crna maslina (Black Olive) collection (1955), and Mačak Džingiskan i Miki Trasi (The Cat Đžingiskan and Miki Trasi ) for her verse novel ) (1968) she was awarded the Grigor Vitez Award. She received the Matica Srpska award in Novi Sad in 1972 as the most successful children's poet, and in 1970 she was awarded a poetry diploma in Paris.

In 2003 she received the Tin Ujević award for her sonnet collection. In 1982 she received an award for her life's work.
