Viðarlundin á Debesartrøð is a park in Tórshavn , the capital of the Faroe Islands . Often it is also called Býarpark , which literally means city park . This park should not be confused with the Tórshavner Stadtpark ( Viðarlundin í Havn ).

The Faroese word viðarlund literally means "wood" and describes a park or forest in the Faroe Islands , of which only 0.06% is forested.

Location of the park

The monument to the Faroese language, Móðurmálið , by Janus Kamban at the east entrance of the park. In the background the national library of the Faroe Islands.

The park, which consists mainly of spruce and pine trees, was laid out in a hilly, rocky landscape and can be clearly seen from the sea. It is located not far to the west of JC Svabos Gøta street in the Debesartrøð district . There are several important buildings and sights in the immediate vicinity. The University of the Faroe Islands borders the park to the north , while the Faroe Islands State Library is directly to the east of the park . The park is broken up by several rocks and flower beds, and paved walking paths lead through it. At one of the entrances to Viðarlundin á Debesartrøð at JC Svabos Gøta, the sculpture Móðurmálið by Janus Kamban , one of the most important artists of the Faroe Islands, is worth seeing.

Creation of the park

After the first trees had been planted in the area of corridor 1026b on the grounds of today's park in 1957, the desire for a green area in this exposed location was expressed in the 1960s. For financial reasons, the forest authority (Skógfriðingarnevndin) was not able to take care of the area until March 30, 1982, so that the park could continue.

The park Viðarlundin á Debesartrøð is owned by the government of the Faroe Islands and extends over five plots: The plots Flur 1023a (12,900 m²) and 1023b (2,600 m²) in the southern part of the site at the nautical school are grouped under the name Sjómannsskúlatrøð . Plot hall 1025a (7,300 m²) is known under the name Müllerstrøð , while hall 1026a (10,100 m²) and hall 1026b (6,000 m²) are combined under the name Debesartrøð . Overall, Viðarlundin á Debesartrøð Park covers an area of 38,900 m² and is the second largest green space within the city of Tórshavn after Tórshavn City Park . It consists mainly of spruce trees , but also pines and - in contrast to most other forests - grow in it the Faroe Islands - different types of beeches ( Nothofagus ).
