Viðarlundin við Suðuroyar Sjúkrahús is a park in the town of Tvøroyri on the Faroese island of Suðuroy . It consists mainly of spruce , ash , maple , alder and birch and is located in the city center opposite and above the hospital. The Faroese word viðarlund literally means "wood" and describes a park or forest in the Faroe Islands , of which only 0.06% is forested.

In the 1960s, Tvøroyri Hospital developed plans to create a park for the hospital's patients and staff on the sloping site immediately north of the hospital. From 1970 the plot of corridor 376 was planted. The Viðarlundin við Suðuroyar Sjúkrahús park today covers an area of 10,800 m² and is owned by the hospital. It lies at a height of 40–70 m above sea level. d. M., through it leads a hiking trail with benches.

With their cool, humid climate, the Faroe Islands are poorly suited for trees to thrive, because the topsoil is relatively thin and tree roots offer little support. It is not uncommon for strong winds to blow that can uproot trees. 1988 raged z. B. a particularly severe hurricane over the entire Faroe Islands, which fell victim to many trees. It happens that the trees fall in a mild January or February and are surprised in the spring by suddenly falling frost.

Viðarlundin við Suðuroyar Sjúkrahús, which is laid out on sloping terrain, is a special attraction of the city of Tvøroyri, as it shows that there can be a forest or a park on the Faroe Islands. Like all forests and parks in the Faroe Islands outside the capital Tórshavn , Viðarlundin við Suðuroyar Sjúkrahús is also fenced in to protect the trees from foraging sheep.
