Viöler Madonna

The Viöl Madonna is a sculpture of the Enthroned Mother of God from the 13th century , which was found around 1900 in the attic of the St. Christophorus Church in Viöl , North Friesland . It has been part of the collection of the Flensburg Museum since 1901 .

Mary is depicted as the enthroned queen of heaven with child . While it was previously assumed that the sculpture was created by a master from northern France towards the end of the 13th century , it is now assumed that the sculpture , which is one of the greatest seated madonnas in Schleswig, was made by a regional master with a knowledge of northern French Had possessed high Gothic sculpture .

Maria is missing the right forearm with the hand that carried the lily scepter . The child lacks the left hand with the imperial orb as a symbol of world domination and the right hand of blessing.

In the 1980s, a true-to-original copy was made from synthetic resin . It is now in a niche in the wall of the choir arch of St. Christophorus Church in Viöl.
