Via Sacra (Canhas)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Via Sacra in the municipality of Canhas in the district ( concelho ) of Ponta do Sol is an open-air crossroads on the Portuguese island of Madeira .

It was built in 1964 and consists of 14 crosses along a regional road that leads to the Paul da Serra plateau . One of the endpoints is the Monumento de Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus cultural monument .

Every 100 meters apart there is one of the crosses that represent the stations that Jesus Christ covered from the Praetorium to Golgotha , where he was crucified. They are numbered in Roman numerals. A wooden cross stands on a concrete base with an ivory crucifix attached. The respective donors are noted by name in the base.
